Tracking our next round of snow

Snow will be heaviest above 7,000 feet

Tuesday may be nice and sunny, but our next round of winter weather isn't far off.

Light mountain snow will begin to fall by Tuesday night, and last through Wednesday.

At lower elevations, snow, likely with some rain mixed in, will begin to fall by Thursday afternoon, and turn over to all snow by Thursday night, before winding down early on Friday.

Heavy mountain snow is expected, and the heavy bands of snow will likely affect lower elevations as well, especially Thursday night.

Given that that onset of this snowfall is still about 48 hours away (for most of us), and that forecast models are still showing significant differences in snow accumulation across much on North Central Montana, I've held off on creating a detailed snow map, but will do so when the forecast becomes more clear.

Confidence in snowfall is high enough for the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Watch for Parts of the area Wednesday evening through Friday morning.

Areas under the watch and below 4,000 feet will likely pick up 3 to 6 inches of snow, with up to 12 inches above 4,000 feet, and up to 24 inches above 7,000 feet.

It is important to note that Great Falls is not under the Winter Storm Watch at this time.
