Watch Bill Nye Make Pizza Dough Using A Water Bottle

Posted
and last updated

Bill Nye first took the world by storm in the 1990s with his informative, yet fun television show “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” With his catchy theme song (which kids today would likely call a “bop”) and his down-to-earth explanations of complex scientific phenomena, Nye produced a recipe for success.

Today, Nye is cooking up new segments — only this time he’s sharing his expertise on the social media platform TikTok. He’s made a number of viral videos lately about the importance of wearing face masks as well as their effectiveness in reducing the spread of COVID-19.

His most recent video, though, is a little less serious. In fact, it looks more like Nye might be trying to break into a new genre of content: cooking segments. Of course, he still shows his trademark science slant and dry humor in the new TikTok video. But, this time he’s sharing his expertise in making something tasty: pizza!

More than 20 million people have viewed the viral video, which started with Nye using some unorthodox cooking container to start his pizza dough. Instead of a bowl, he used a plastic water bottle to mix water, sugar and fast-acting yeast.

Once he combined all the three ingredients, he shook them up, and then he capped it off with a balloon to demonstrate the carbon dioxide gas created from the chemical reaction between the water, sugar, and yeast. And, it wouldn’t be a Bill Nye the Science Guy segment without all those fun sound effects.

After that scientific demonstration, Nye skipped directly into showing the audience some risen dough. We’re not exactly sure the ingredients he added to his yeast and sugar mix, but the dough looked fantastic.

From there, he wrapped up his culinary science video by baking and showing off his complete pizza.

“It’s not magic, people,” Nye concluded. “It’s science!”

We do think his veggie and salmon pizza pie topped with crème fraîche looked pretty magical, though. Wouldn’t you agree?

Would you consider making a pizza like this to show your kids the science behind cooking and baking? It looks like a fun way to get the young ones to help in the kitchen.
