A man died after being hit by a train in Melrose on Friday, October 25, 2024. He was hit near the railroad's intersection with Trapper Creek Road sometime before 10 a.m.
Investigation at the scene, near the train's intersection with Trapper Creek Road in Melrose, found that a man who had been standing on the railroad tracks was struck by a northbound Union Pacific train.
Sheriff Ed Lester said the train crew sounded an audible alarm and applied the train's brakes but were unable to stop.
The man stayed on the tracks until the train hit him.

The Sheriff says the man was a 58-year-old resident of Melrose. His name is being withheld pending notification of family.
Responding agencies included Butte-Silver Bow Police, Montana Highway Patrol, Beaverhead County Sheriff's Office, and Madison County Sheriff's Office.
Melrose is about 35 miles south of Butte, and 30 miles north of Dillon.
