Helena teacher Melissa Romano running again for MT Superintendent of Public Instruction

Posted

A Helena teacher who ran unsuccessfully for Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2016 will campaign for the position again.

Melissa Romano, a Democrat, announced Tuesday that she will be a candidate in the 2020 election.

“Montana students need a fierce leader in their Superintendent, who will advocate every day on their behalf,” Romano said in a statement.

Romano was the 2016 Democratic nominee for state superintendent. Her 2020 candidacy could set up a rematch with Superintendent Elsie Arntzen, a Republican. Arntzen defeated Romano 51.6% to 48.4% in the 2016 election.

Romano is a fourth-grade teacher at Four Georgians Elementary School. She was named Montana’s state Teacher of the Year for 2018. She also received a National Science Foundation award for mathematics education in 2012.

In her announcement statement, Romano said she wanted to provide leadership and promote quality public education for all students.

“Montana parents want a champion for their kids and as Montana’s next Superintendent of Public Instruction, I will be that champion,” she said.
