HELENA — Four months of building have finally led Kate and Ian McLean to their passion, preparing and baking different breads for their customers.

"It's wonderful to have a space built just for us,” says Kate, co-owner of Sunflower Bakery. “It's not the largest bakery but it is so much better than our little kitchen that we used to work out of."

That little kitchen was their home. The couple spent years selling at farmer’s markets before officially opening their new storefront on December 8th, 2020.They are still learning to adjust to the new space.

"What we're finding so far is that we're working a little bit longer than we intended and making a little more than we were intending," says Ian, also the co-owner of Sunflower Bakery.

Sunflower has hired another employee to help with their good problem of selling out throughout each week since opening. In review of 2020, the owners said the hardest part of opening a bakery was the commitment.

“I remember in the beginning, they said even to get a quote in this bakery, this project, you first had to have architectural documents, which cost thousands and thousands of dollars,” says Kate. “You kind of have to commit before you were necessarily ready to commit. That was really challenging."

Sunflower Bakery is aiming high in 2021. They're already in talks about hiring more employees and possibly starting up their delivery service once again.

Their new address is 1442 Euclid Avenue.
