GREAT FALLS — The snow is piling up in Glacier County and moving into other parts of north-central Montana, creating dangerous driving conditions.

We have received several reports of heavy blowing and drifting snow in and around Browning, Cut Bank, and Conrad.

The Glacier County Sheriff's Office is urging people to stay off the roads unless there is a "legitimate emergency." In a Facebook post, the Sheriff's Office used humor to get the point across:

  • Chionophobia is defined as "an abnormal fear or extreme dislike of snow"
  • Most people in our area DO NOT have that. In fact, what we run into frequently is people driving around in terrible weather for no good reason. There are some people who wake up, look outside, see that it's blizzarding and say "I think i'll go drive around in this." Then they go driving, slide into the ditch or cause an accident and blame it on the weather.
  • The weather is terrible. All of the roads in Glacier County are SEVERE DRIVING CONDITIONS. Other than a legitimate emergency, there is no good reason to be driving in this today. Stay home. Stay close to the fire. Read a book. Just please don't drive around in your 87 Taurus and pretend it's "ok."
  • Stay safe my friends

More widespread snow is on track to move in throughout the day and overnight. Blowing and drifting snow is likely later today, especially for the Northern portions of the Rocky Mountain front. A Blizzard Warning is in effect for this region. Limited visibility and poor travel is likely throughout nearly all of Central Montana.

Heavier and more widespread snow is likely through the remainder of the week. The Northern Rocky Mountain Front has the potential to receive well over a foot of snow through Friday. Great Falls and Central Montana are expected to pick up 5 to 8 inches through Friday with Helena receiving 3 to 5 inches.
