BOZEMAN — MTN News has new information regarding one of the passengers injured in a crash on Kelly Canyon Road that claimed the life of a Belgrade teen.

Three teens were injured in the crash that killed 18-year-old Madison Montgomery-Lukenbill east of Bozeman at around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2024.

We now know the identity of one of the injured teens - 18-year-old Jason Menard.

Jason's family says he was in the car's back seat when, according to the Montana Highway Patrol, the driver - a 17-year-old boy who has not been publicly identified - lost control of the vehicle.

The Volkswagen Beetle reportedly was traveling at high speed and slammed into a guard rail. It continued over the creek and up an embankment, where it came to a rest on the passenger side.
Menard's family has started a GoFundMe campaign as he recovers in the critical care unit in Bozeman.

They are fundraising for his medical bills for lacerations to his kidneys and lungs, spleen, and liver, along with a fractured pelvis.

(1st REPORT, SEPTEMBER 16) One teen died and three others were injured in a one-car crash in Gallatin County on Sunday, September 15, 2024.

It happened just before 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Fort Ellis Road and Kelly Canyon Road.

According to the Montana Highway Patrol, the four teens were eastbound in a Volkswagen Beetle at a "high rate of speed."

The 18-year old male driver lost control while negotiating a left-hand curve, and the car went off the road to the right.

The car then collided with a guardrail, continued over a creek and up an embankment, and came to rest on its passenger side.

1 teen dead, 3 injured in Gallatin County crash

All four occupants were taken to Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, where an 18-year female passenger died.

NOTE: the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office said on Monday afternoon that the young woman died at the scene, not at the hospital.

The identity of the young woman has not been released, but a Belgrade High School public information officer tells MTN News that she was a recent graduate.

The other three occupants were the driver, an 18-year old female, and an 18-year old male. The nature and severity of their injuries has not been disclosed.

The MHP says that alcohol and speed are believed to have been factors in the crash, and that the driver and one of the female passengers were wearing seatbelts; the other two passengers were not.
