(GREAT FALLS) Attorney General Tim Fox is encouraging Montanans to participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday.

You can drop off your unwanted prescription pills and patches for free, no-questions-asked, at one of the 34 participating collection sites across the state.

According to the Montana Department of Justice, National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses vital public safety and health issues. The state’s participation represents part of the attorney general’s Aid Montana initiative.

Over 914,000 pounds of drugs were brought to collection sites nationwide last October.

In Montana, over 36,000 pounds of prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications have been collected since 2010.

Drop-off locations in our area include:

  • Montana Highway Patrol in Great Falls
  • Lewistown Police Department
  • Toole County Sheriff’s Office
  • Rocky Boy Police Department
  • The Glacier Peak’s Casino in Browning

There are a number of items that will not be accepted at drop-off site, including illegal drugs, chemotherapy drugs and needles.

Those who cannot attend a Take Back Day event, or who aren’t near one of the hosting towns, can dispose of their unwanted medications by visiting a drug drop-box location, of which there are over 50 across Montana.

Updates regarding individual events can be found here. The attorney general’s office said via press release that this website has been updated with all participating locations.

Once the drugs are collected, incinerators are used to safely destroy them.
