BILLINGS – Plowing has started on Montana’s scenic Beartooth Highway.

The road closes each year due to excessive snow and winter conditions.

On Monday, crews began to clear the highway, which was covered with roughly four new inches of snow.

Montana Department of Transportation crews will typically meet 26-foot high snow drifts.

The highway is set to open May 24, the Friday before Memorial Day.

The 68-mile highway is between Red Lodge and the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park.
