DEER LODGE – Jason Sanchez of Deer Lodge lives for striking gold.

“I love mining. Grew up playing in a sandbox with Tonka Toys. I do the same thing for a living, my toys are just bigger,” said Sanchez.

He now hopes he’s struck gold with his part in the Discovery Channel’s new reality TV show, “Gold Rush: Dave Turin’s Lost Mine.”

The show follows Turin’s quest across the west to mine for gold. Sanchez joined Turin’s team.

“As he went around on his journey, he kind of collected a crew of misfits, I guess you could say. He found guys with good hearts and wanted to work and weren’t scared for work,” said Sanchez.

Turin stopped in Deer Lodge this week to visit with Sanchez about the show, which wrapped up taping last November. He said the show is a celebration of the human spirit.

“It’s not easy, so it takes a pretty unique person to chase a dream like this, and that’s what I think people of Montana is going to enjoy, some guys taking a risk, taking a chance,” said Turin.

Turin said Sanchez was a valuable part of the show because of his experience with mining and he’s just a really good guy.

“What I did was I made a vow that I’m going to work with people that I enjoy, I like hanging out with that are more like family and friends and that I respect and they respect me. Well, Jason was one of the first guys I picked up,” said Turin.

Viewers can see how much gold Turin and Sanchez picked up on their journey. The show airs Friday at 8 p.m. on the Discovery Channel.
