Western Montana Humane Society offers date with a dog

Posted

MISSOULA – The Humane Society of Western Montana held their biggest doggie field trip yet, with their “Date with a Dog” foster program on Friday.

It’s part of a 100 shelter nationwide study to learn more about reducing stress in kennel dogs.

Programs like this aim to help the dogs get adopted and volunteers took the animals on hikes, coffee dates, and naps at home.

“We will learn about their preferences out in the world. We’ll learn if they really enjoy going on a walk, or if they’d rather snuggle and watch a movie, so I think that will be the most important thing for potential adopters,” Humane Society Director of Programs Mariah Scheskie said.

Taleen Harrington works just down the street and got to bring Lilly to work with her for the day.

“We are going to go for a walk and hang out in the office. Get to know each other, said Harrington who already has three dogs, but loves to spend time as a volunteer.

Scheskie said they have 40 dogs going on dates, looking for families to settle down with.

“I know that my pets make a huge difference in my life. Being able to be a part of that process in terms of finding someone a new family member is just really rewarding.”

The program is just getting started, soon to be a permanent chance to volunteer.
