University of Montana hosts second Black Solidarity Summit

Posted

MISSOULA— In 2017, the University of Montana reported that 79 percent of its students were Caucasian.

This weekend, the Black Student Union is hosting its second annual Black Solidarity Summit in the University Center, right in the middle of Black History Month.

The Summit runs until Monday and aims to address issues surrounding racial discrimination and black academic enrollment. Students bring speakers from across the country to engage in discourse and promote collaboration.

Black Solidarity Summit Head Coordinator Natasha Kalonde said people are coming from Michigan, Utah, Idaho and Washington to network.

“I think it’s going to be fun because it’s a bunch of people that look like you and also are going through the same things or have gone through the same things,” Kalonde said. “I can learn from that and so can others.”

This year’s keynote speaker is Ericka Hart, a black activist and writer with a Master’s Degree in Human Sexuality.
