Man reportedly armed with a gun and a hatchet shot by police in Bozeman

(BOZEMAN) A man is dead after a Bozeman police officer shot him early Friday morning while responding to a call for a reported assault.

According to a press release, Bozeman Police Chief Steve Crawford said officers responded to a call at a residence on Summer View Lane in Bozeman involving a reportedly intoxicated man who was assaulting his adult male roommate at approximately 11:44 p.m.

Officers found the roommate outside the residence and the suspect was inside but was not cooperative with their instructions.

At approximately 12:07 a.m. the suspect, reportedly armed with a hatchet and a handgun, came toward officers when an officer shot the man. The man died at the scene.

There were no injuries to the officers.

The incident is being handled by the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, assisted by the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities have not yet identified the man who died, nor any of the officers involved in the incident.
