(HELENA) Montana’s Office of Security Services is offering advice about internet security during National Cyber Security Awareness Month.
On Thursday, the department hosted an awareness event at the Capitol.
Through games and interactive activities, the state’s cyber-security experts emphasized the importance of locking down your personal information.
Chief Information Security Officer Andy Hanks says his office is especially worried about phishing, when people are lured through an email, text message, or phone call into sharing sensitive data like passwords or bank details.
“That’s why we encourage people to use different passwords for their banking accounts, that they might use for their Netflix account,” he said. “Cause you think about the danger of someone getting into your Netflix and seeing your viewing history, versus someone getting into your bank account and getting all your money, right?”
The state is also encouraging schools to participate in a statewide cyber security poster contest, called “Kids Safe Online.”
Thirteen winners will be chosen, and their posters will be used across the state and in a calendar.
According to Hanks, kids are the best choice to encourage their peers to make smart decisions online, since they know how young people use the internet.
