Montana farmers in the Golden Triangle cannot seem to catch a break with the recent weather.
Multiple severe thunderstorms have produced strong winds and damaging hail over the past few weeks.
According to the latest U.S. Department of Agriculture progress report, producers in Cascade County indicated severe hail damage to both crops and livestock pastures.
Staff with ProAg, a crop insurance company that covers about 500,000 acres in Montana, said about 50 percent of their insured producers have reported crop damage.
“Since May 26th, we’ve had 23 storm dates so that’s consistent with crop years like 2013, when it was real bad across the state, but we aren’t seeing the widespread catastrophic damage that we did that year,” Joe Kemph, ProAg area claims supervisor, said.
ProAg is just one of many insurance companies that offers coverage to farmers in case of crop loss.
Of the 500,000 acres that ProAg insures, Chouteau and Hill counties were some of the hardest hit.
