The 2018 Livestock Show and Sale, also known as the 4H Fill Your Freezer event, brought many people from across Montana to Great Falls recently.

“This is their chance to show them off. It’s their chance to compete against the other 4H kids,” said Brooke Gerard, Livestock Leader Council member.

The kids, ages 8-18, get their projects through 4H as early as October, depending on the livestock they choose to raise.

“I like showing my animals, especially at county because it’s a really big fair and you actually get rewards. It’s just, I like talking about my animals and showing them off,” said 14-year-old 4H member Makayla Baker.

But the event is not only a chance to show off their animals, but to get rewarded for their hard work. The auction at the end of the day has those betting their money for high quality products without having to take a trip to the grocery store.

“This is the basis of Montana agriculture. This is what, if you talk to a lot of our buyers a lot of our parents, this is a second and third generation type of fun for them. And it’s a chance to really develop as human beings as good people,” Gerard said.

And although sometimes considered a chore, the kids admit they learn more than just how to raise livestock.

“I know that a lot of people learn from it. They learn how to grow up. I’ve known a lot of people who have had a lot of struggles and then when they come to 4H they just become this really mature person,” Baker said.

4H offers many other programs aside from raising livestock; to learn more about it, visit their website.
