GREAT FALLS — Housing options in Great Falls are about to expand, as construction of Rockcress Commons, a 124-unit multi-family apartment complex on the south side of town, is nearing completion.

"We were later than we wanted to, but we really seem to be moving along quite well," NeighborWorks Great Falls Executive Director Sherrie Arey said. "We hope to have the project done by December 2019."

Crews broke ground on the complex in September of 2018. The apartments, which range from one-bedroom to three-bedrooms with an expected monthly rent of $446 to $966, are near Benefis Health System, the University of Providence, and Great Falls College MSU.

NeighborWorks Great Falls, GMD Development, and the Montana Board of Housing are the major partners for the project.

“I think the highest point for us with Rockcress will be able to provide a nice, safe, welcoming environment for hardworking members of our community that they’re going to have a brand new apartment that they can live in," Arey said. "They will be close to their work, and they can begin to build up themselves as we hope that they stay in our community and eventually at some point move on to home ownership.”

The units will have full kitchens, washer and dryers, and outside spaces. Rockcress Commons will also offer a community building that can be rented out and a small playground.

For those wishing to rent at Rockcress, the availability ranges from one person with an annual income of around $20,000 to a six-person family with an income around $47,000.

A move-in date has not been announced, however, NeighborWorks is accepting inquiries concerning qualification and availability.

Arey stated NeighborWorks is working with the city of Great Falls to plan "rolling opens," or allow families to move into completed units when other buildings in the complex are still under construction.

Rockcress Commons is by 23rd Street South and 24th Avenue South and near the site of Meriwether Crossing, a new development totaling 20.6 acres.

Meriwether Crossing will be developed into 83 lots. A minimum of 50 lots will be dedicated to NeighborWorks’ Owner Build Program while the remaining 33 lots will be for single family homes.

The Owner Build Program is a part of a Rule Development Grant where families work together as a community to build their homes together.
