(FIRST REPORT, 9:03 am) : There was a large police presence at an apartment building near the Great Falls Community Recreation Center in Great Falls on Friday morning.

It happened at around 7:15 a.m. at or near the intersection of 2nd Avenue North and 8th Street.

Witnesses told KRTV that the police presence included members of the SWAT team, and that it appears that several people were arrested.

We have received unconfirmed reports that officers were serving warrants.

A staff member at nearby Whittier Elementary School told KRTV that the school was briefly placed in lockdown status as a precaution.

Messages on the KRTV Facebook page included:

  • There were police cars and what looked like a SWAT vehicle next to the community rec center this morning.
  • Anyone know what is going on on 8th and 2nd ave north? Involving swat and someone on the ground?
  • any idea why gfpd is dressing in SWAT gear downtown. Like 5-7 people cuffed and car’d just outside the rec center. Broken window and all.
  • Possibly shots fired and swat with teargas and cops diagonally from from Whittier...apt complex corner of 8th st and 2nd ave n

The scene was cleared within about 40 minutes. There have been no reports of injuries.

We will update you when we get more information.
