GREAT FALLS — The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is one of Alaska’s - and the nation's - iconic winter events. The race starts in Anchorage on the first Saturday of March each year.
Steven Humes of Great Falls has been training for the race, but he still has two races to finish before he qualifies - the Oregon Eagle Cap Extreme (200 miles) and the Idaho Sled Dog Challenge (300 miles.)
So why does Steven want to compete in the iditarod?
He explained, “The Iditarod is a true testament of the human spirit and the animal soul to be able to push the limits, to see who can cross the line first or at all. It's certainly a cool achievement, something to be proud of."
He also said of his beloved dogs: “Aren’t vicious in any way, people may think they are more aggressive than other dogs. May be true on the trail when they are getting ready to go, but for the most part, they are pretty."
