GFPS considering options for graduation ceremonies

GREAT FALLS — Great Falls Public Schools announced last week they will conduct three graduation ceremonies - all at the Four Seasons arena at Montana ExpoPark - and said that only the graduates can be physically present inside at the services. The decision was in consultation with public health officials due to concerns about the possible spread of COVID-19.

That announcement has been met with some criticism, as many family members have argued that denying families the option to watch their child graduate in person is an over-reaction to the coronavirus situation, in light of the extremely small numbers of COVID-19 cases in the community.

On Friday, GFPS said they are sending surveys to graduating seniors and their parents that will include the original option of a ceremony for graduates only, several smaller ceremonies to allow visitors, or an outdoor ceremony to accommodate two visitors per graduate.

The Board of Trustees will meet on Monday to review the survey responses.
