GREAT FALLS — A house fire on Tuesday night left five Great Falls families displaced right before Christmas.

Great Falls Fire Rescue was called to a six-plex near 9th Street South and 2nd Avenue South around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, where residents in the building called 911 after noticing a fire in the basement. The fire spread to the attic and caused significant damage.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated. Everyone got out safely, including several pets, but the fire left at least 10 people without a place to live.

The Red Cross is working with the displaced residents to meet their immediate needs, like basic necessities and shelter. Matt Oschner, communications director for the Red Cross of Greater Idaho and Montana, said one way you can help the families is by supporting both the Red Cross and local nonprofits that are helping the families get back on their feet.

“We couldn’t help out people without the support of our communities,” he said.
