GREAT FALLS — Ash Wednesday marked the beginning of Lent for the Catholic community, and is symbolized by placing the sign of the cross on your forehead with ashes.
The ashes are made of palm leaves from the Palm Sunday ceremony from the previous years' Palm Sunday celebration.
Father Doug Krings with Holy Spirit Catholic Parish said, "Some people enjoy the humbling experience of the ashes being placed...as well as to hear the saying, 'Remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return.'"
He added, “There's something about it. Something inside of us I guess that draws people towards it. It has an impact for everyone so it means something to them when they put ashes on your forehead.”
