GREAT FALLS — A unique piece of artwork was installed on Thursday on the River’s Edge Trail.

Metal artist Alex Smithson created an eight-legged metal octopus entirely out of scrap metal and old tools. He donated it to the trail, and it was installed on the north end of West Bank Park. It weighs about 700 pounds.

Smithson already has several pieces installed along the trail. For Smithson, the new octopus sculpture has special meaning.

“I’ve been playing at West Bank Park since I moved to Great Falls, playing with snakes and fishing,” he said. “So it’s cool to have a piece at West Bank Park now.”

Smithson said he gets most of his metal from garage sales, and making this piece put quite a dent in his supply.
