The 341st Security Forces Group kicked off National Police Week by honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
741st Missile Security Force Squadron Captain Ricardo Gonzalez said it is important to remember the people who came before them.
“There are many men and women – civilian, federal, and military – that have given the ultimate price so I can wear this uniform as well as wear this badge,” Gonzalez said.
On Wednesday, airmen from the 341st Security Force Squadron, 341st Missile Security Force Squadron, 741st Missile Security Force Squadron, 841st Missile Security Force Squadron, and 341st 741st Security Support Squadron came together for a friendly competition.
“We are doing our battle of the badges. In a nutshell, it is seeing who is the top shot between our security forces group,” Gonzalez said.
Senior Airman Cara Williams convinced her best friend, Senior Airman Katy Wagge, to enter the battle for the 841st Missile Security Force Squadron.
“We are going through all the motions together and struggling together, it is something that brings you together,” Wagge said.
Teams of four must first do a physical test starting with a fireman carry.
“My favorite part was the buddy carry because it was the most difficult. I was just exhausted when we started it,” Williams said.
But Wagge pushed Williams to keep going through the 20 burpees, 20 pushups, and 20 flutter kicks before moving on to the next task.
“There is not a lot of females that we are surrounded with, so it is nice to be able to represent,” Wagge said.
Once the fireman carry is complete, competitors are tested on their firing skills. They must perform target identification and accuracy.
“Whenever law enforcement goes into a high stress situation, their heart is going and they could go tunnel vision, so we are trying to combat that with simulating it,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez added his favorite part is seeing the airmen come together and build camaraderie.
National Police Week events will wrap up on Malmstrom with a display at the Base Exchange from 2-5 p.m. Thursday.
