Ryan Island Park, the public recreational area at Ryan Dam on the Missouri River, will open Sunday, May 12.
NorthWestern Energy reported its crew has worked to get Ryan Island ready for the summer season.
Ryan Island is in the middle of the Missouri River connected by a suspension bridge over the power plant wash of Ryan Dam.
Ryan Dam is a six-unit hydroelectric plant. You can also access the River’s Edge Trail from that point.
The picnic area is open to the public from Mother’s Day to Labor Day daylight to dark, seven days a week. Reservations are not required.
There is also the historic Ryan Dam Clubhouse above the picnic area with stoves, refrigerators, a reception hall, and restrooms that is available free of charge. Reservations are required for its use.
The popular area is a part of the Great Falls Portage National Historic Landmark, which was designated by the federal government in 1966 to commemorate Lewis and Clark’s travel around the five falls of the Missouri River in 1805.
