Ice Breaker runners power on despite spring blizzard

Posted

A Great Falls spring tradition got the cold shoulder from Mother Nature, but that didn’t stop runners from hitting the road.

The 40th annual Ice Breaker Road Race kicked off at 1 p.m. Sunday with the 5-mile race. There was also a 3-mile run and 1-mile fun run to fit every ability.

“I felt good because to tell you the truth, you know the wind was pretty tough on you, there was times you get out of breath and it would make it harder on your stride and when I saw the finish line, I was thinking to myself, ‘Oh, I’m almost there’ and it felt pretty good to get it done anyway today,”  Duey Bear Medicine, 5-mile runner, said.

Runners could warm up with food as well as entertainment from the Japanese Taiko drumming group HIBIKIYA at the Great Falls Civic Center.

Patty Rearden, Great Falls Park and Recreation deputy director, said the weather certainly kept some runners away, but people still had fun.
