Gardens from Garbage growing interest in fresh foods

Posted

GREAT FALLS – A Great Falls group brought fresh food knowledge to the Electric City Saturday.

Gardens from Garbage hosted a fresh food forum at Great Falls College MSU.

The group aims to educate adults and youth about growing and sustaining local produce.

They work with organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, Salvation Army and the Great Falls Rescue Mission at their west side orchard garden.

They focus on how to grow produce independently, from seeds, as well as how to cook with what’s been harvested.

The fresh food forum brought together 14 different vendors to educate people on everything from planting to preparing your produce.

The event had adult classes and a kid’s activity fair.

“When kids grow their own food they really take ownership over it,” said Abigail Lichliter, Gardens From Garbage board member. “I see kids that really don’t eat a ton of vegetables and when they grow them they’re running and picking radishes and gobbling them down, they’re eating steamed zucchini, we grill vegetables. So when they take part in that process of growing, they really want to eat it and consume it.”

They hold the forum in the early spring to give people interested in starting a garden or planning something new a chance to plan ahead.

If you could not make it out to the forum, Lichliter recommends reaching out to MSU Extension Master Garners Program.
