Great Falls City Commission to vote on Wheat Ridge Estates

The Great Falls City Commission will vote whether or not to annex about 22 acres for Wheat Ridge Estates Tuesday night.

The motion to annex the site near the east side Walmart was tabled last September.

At that time, city planning and development staff recommended the commission deny the 40-lot development.

The city’s concerns involved water runoff, limited access for emergency services and potential negative impacts on Malmstrom Air Force Base.

About seven acres of the proposal lies inside the Accident Potential Zone (APZ) of Malmstrom’s runway.

The runway hasn’t been used since 1995, but a development in its path would jeopardize future flying missions.

While city staff say the plan for water drainage has been improved, they have not seen any updates on emergency access and their opinion remains the same.

“The city believes there has not been enough done by the applicant to address all three of the issues that were on the table six months ago,” said Tom Micuda, Great Falls Planning and Community Development Deputy Director.

Calls to the project developer at Woith Engineering Inc were not returned by the time of this report.

The ultimate decision is up to the City Commission.

The Commission meeting starts Tuesday at 7 p.m.
