It’s rodeo weekend in the Electric City and area cowboys took to the arena this morning for the North 40 Ranch Rodeo.

The competition put teams head-to-head in events like team sorting, doctoring, and branding.

It finishes, however, with one of the most challenging events: bronc riding.

Eight teams competed Saturday and the team from Sun River rode away with 25 points for first place.

Sun River team captain Matt Nisly said their team likes to get to a few competitions a year, but when the day is done, it’s all about using the skills they build at home.

“These events are events that we actually use on the ranch so something that we’ll do. Next week we’ll be branding calves and I’ll have some of the same guys coming over and we’ll rope them, head them, and heel them, and stretch them out just like we did here today,” he said. “It’s not on the clock, but that’s what makes it different. Some of the events in pro rodeo are not quite as directly connected to ranch work.”

Saturday’s winners walked away with about $2,500.
