Motor vehicle injuries are a leading cause of death among children in the United States according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Firefighters, nurses, along with several other people recently were trained with a four day class of car seat education and safety.
On Friday, firefighters at Fire Station One put their skills to the test with a free seat belt check for the public.
Marykay Burns who is both a Public Health Nurse and a Child Passenger Safety Instructor said one of the best ways to protect your children is to properly buckle them in car seats, then booster seats and finally when old enough with a seatbelt.
A couple of car seat checks are held every year, but since more firefighters are getting trained, more events will likely be held at fire stations in the future.
Burns added, “Montana has a high fatality rate on the roads and buckling your seatbelt is about the best thing you can do to protect yourself and if you keep children buckled up from the time they’re born, it becomes a habit with them.”
