A wildland fire is burning east of I-15 near Gates of the Mountains northeast of Helena.
The Campbell Fire was roughly estimated at 20 acres on Thursday afternoon, and is burning in a steep area with trees and dry grass with wind playing a factor.
Montana DNRC, hotshots from the Helena National Forest, West Valley, East Valley, and Lewis & Clark County firefighters are at the scene.
A DNRC helicopter is also making regular bucket drops on the fire.
Crews are optimistic they’ll be able to get a handle on the fire by Friday morning, and it’s burning in an area that currently isn’t threatening any structures.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
DNRC is asking everyone to take extra care right now when dragging chains or starting a warming fire. Any fire pit should be cold to the touch before it is left.
