MISSOULA — A suspect in a reported stabbing and kidnapping died after being shot by a officer on Sunday, July 21, 2024, in Mineral County.
The Mineral County Sheriff's Office reports the shooting happened at about 11 a.m. in the Fish Creek area.
According to Sheriff Ryan Funke, the suspect had been involved in an "altercation that led to a stabbing and subsequent kidnapping."
While law enforcement officers were setting up a perimeter, the suspect came out of the heavily-wooded area with the hostage and a weapon.
The suspect reportedly refused to obey commands from the officers and was shot.
Life-saving measures were attempted, but the suspect died at the scene, according to Sheriff Funke.
There were no injuries to any of the officers. There is no word at this point on the condition of the hostage.
The Montana Division of Criminal Investigations, Missoula County Sheriff's Office detectives, and a Missoula Police Department detective were called to process the scene.
No other details have been released at this point, including the name of the suspect.
