GREAT FALLS — More than 80 horses have been seized by court order at a breeding operation in Madison County.
According to a news release from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Morgan horses were seized during an investigation into animal cruelty.
Some of the horses appeared to be underweight and suffering from untreated medical conditions, injuries, and hoof issues.
The two agencies said the horses will received the support they need until legal disposition is determined.
If the ASPCA is granted ownership of the horses, they are committed to finding appropriate, safe, and loving homes for them, taking into consideration the genetic importance of this population as well as their individual needs.
The Sheriff's Office also noted: "We had an urgent need for grass hay specifically, as we already have an abundance of alfalfa hay. We have some horses that need the grass hay only. Our community responded overwhelmingly, securing a few truckloads of grass hay. Thank you for your assistance."
The release said animal cruelty charges have been filed in the case, which is being prosecuted by the Madison County Attorney’s Office.
No other details have been released at this point. We will update you if we get more information.
