Cascade County has reported a cumulative total of 421 cases as of Friday. Of those, 254 are listed as recovered, 162 are currently listed as active, and five people have died. The City-County Health Department in Great Falls said of the latest confirmed cases: one male and one female under the age of 20; two women in their 20s; two men in their 20s; one woman in her 30s; three men in their 30s; five women in their 40s; two women in their 50s; two men in their 50s; and two women in their 60s.

Four of the new deaths are in Flathead County; the City-County Health Department in Kalispell says that these deaths are associated with a recent COVID-19 outbreak in a long-term care facility, Whitefish Care & Rehab. The total number of deaths associated with the facility is now 10.

Governor Steve Bullock on Thursday announced a new set of protocols to help Montana schools know how to handle potential COVID-19 cases. The protocols cover what COVID-19 symptoms schools should check for, when someone needs to be isolated or quarantined, and when they should be allowed to return to school. They also include advice for holding sports and other extracurricular activities, and what information can be released if someone tests positive. Click here to read more.

The federal Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) released data in late August which emphasizes that people with contributing or underlying medical conditions are at much greater risk of dying from COVID-19. According to the CDC, an estimated 94% of all COVID-related deaths in the nation were people who had contributing medical conditions and diseases.

The CDC report states: "For 6% of the deaths, COVID-19 was the only cause mentioned. For deaths with conditions or causes in addition to COVID-19, on average, there were 2.6 additional conditions or causes per death." The report states that the most common underlying medical conditions that contributed to COVID-related deaths include respiratory diseases such as pneumonia, asthma, COPD, and influenza; diabetes; hyptertensive diseases; and heart disease.
