and last updated

After a calm day Thursday, winds will be picking up Thursday night.

High Wind Warnings are in effect across the area, and widespread gusts of over 40 mile per hour are expected by Friday morning.

The winds will be picking up as a cold front passes through the area.

This front will also bring mountain snow, making for some slippery passes by Friday morning.

Cooler temperatures are expected as well.

Highs Friday will occur at midnight, and will be in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

Temperatures will fall off slightly through the afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory:

* WHAT…Snow expected above 4500 feet. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches in the foothills, with 3 to 6 inches at Marias Pass and up to a foot in the mountains. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph.

* WHERE…Northern Rocky Mountain Front above 4500 ft, which includes Marias Pass.

* WHEN…From 8 PM this evening to noon MST Friday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Travel could be very difficult. Strong winds could cause some blowing and drifting of snow. Motorists are encouraged to use caution and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Expect snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.
