A washed-out bridge east of Augusta where the Elk Creek overflowed during the June flooding will soon be fixed.
The Montana Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to Helena Sand & Gravel to repair it.
The work includes replacing the failed structure with three seven-foot culverts, filling in the scour and washout areas and restoring base gravel and pavement.
The project is expected to be complete on or around August 17th depending on approval of weather permits.
Alternate routes are available through Fairfield and secondary highway 408 or Bowman’s Corner on Montana highway 200 and U.S. highway 287.
Here is information from the MDT website:
Due to a flood event on June 19th, 2018, the support piling washed out and forced the closure of the bridge over Elk Creek Overflow and the main highway between Augusta and Simms. In order to expedite the re-opening of the roadway, the planned project has been split into three projects.
- The first is a temporary repair to replace the Elk Creek Overflow Bridge with three 7’ diameter culverts, repair the pavement and slopes, and open the road to traffic. MDT and the resource agencies have been working on the necessary permits and plans for the temporary repair with culverts. We are targeting July 12th for advertisement, July 19th for Letting and July 20th for Award of the project. An early Notice to Proceed and a tight schedule for construction should have the road open by mid-August.
- New bridges will be designed to replace the Elk Creek Overflow Bridge and two additional bridges in the vicinity (Elk Creek and Hogan Slough) that are were impacted by the flooding. They are expected to be under construction in 2019. The schedule and work may change depending on project development.
- The final phase will include repair, widening, overlay, and guardrail on the remaining structures in the corridor.
The project includes 11 locations on Montana-21 between MP 19.8, west of Simms, and 0.1, east of Augusta, in Cascade and Lewis & Clark Counties. These bridges and stockpasses were built in the 1930s, and are too narrow to meet modern design standards. Three wooden bridges can be replaced with culverts and the recovery zone can be flattened to eliminate the need for guardrail. Guardrail will be upgraded on one concrete bridges and three wooden bridges that will be re-decked. The public can anticipate seeing construction starting in 2020.
Right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation will be required. As a result of these factors, construction is planned for 2020. In order for the Montana Department of Transportation to deliver these improvements, construction will result in detours and road closures. Drivers may experience some delays.
