The Missoula County Sheriff’s Office on Friday said in a Facebook post that a body was recovered from the Clark Fork River on Thursday.
At about 2 p.m., members of the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office and Missoula Rural Fire recovered the body from the Clark Fork River just west of the Reserve Street Bridge.
Floaters reported seeing the body to dispatch just after 11 a.m.
Sheriff’s Office detectives, along with the Medical Examiner’s Office, are trying to identify the body, which was badly decomposed due to the duration of time in the water.
Deputy Coroner Joshua Johnston said that the body, which is likely that of a six-foot-tall man, was discovered in a tributary off the main channel on the north bank. Johnston said that rough estimates at this point suggest the body has been decomposing for about two months, and that an autopsy will be conducted.
