Mad Hatter’s Tea Party is on Sunday in Great Falls

Posted

(GREAT FALLS) The eighth annual Mad Hatter’s Tea Party will be on Sunday, July 15th, in Great Falls.

Cosplay Great Falls, the event organizer, says that they will have games and prizes, vendors, treats and of course – tea!

Cosplay is a form of performance art where participants dress up as fictional characters that inspire them.

It will be at the Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art. The event page states: "Costumes are encouraged, after all this is a costume event! Costumes must be family friendly. Absolutely NO live steel weapons!! Props must be checked before entry."

Cost: $5.00 per adult and per child (infants free).

  • Schedule: Tea and treats will start at noon. Games, vendors and silent auction will start at 1pm.
  • 3:30 -end of silent auction, winners must pay and pick up items before 4pm
  • 3:50- raffle winner announced, must be present to win, closing discussions
  • 4-7pm clean up and dance set up
  • Costume dance from 7 to 10 pm. Paid entry to the tea party also gets you into the dance. All ages welcome.

Marlesa Popp is one the founders of the annual event; she said that about 10 people attended the first tea party. In recent years attendance has reached 150 people, and she is very happy to see interest in cosplay grow.

Popp said in a message to KRTV after last year’s Tea Party:

I started the tea party as a way to bring people of like minded interests together. I feel it’s extremely important to have a safe and creative outlet for people of all ages. Cosplay helped me "break out of my shell" so to speak. It’s amazing to see young adults that are too shy to speak put a costume on and get positive attention. You see them become confident. Really young kids love dressing up for any reason and when they see an adult in costume they fully believe they are meeting the real character. There is a simple wonder that gets lost in the bustle of day to day life. The tea party brings that wonder alive even if for just a few hours on a Sunday afternoon.

Popp has been an avid cosplayer for several years. She is self-taught, picking up techniques and methods through trial and error, fellow cosplayers, and online video tutorials.
