Water continues rising along the Teton River

Posted

While most of the flooding in recent days has been along the Missouri River and the Sun River west and south of Great Falls, some people along the Teton River in Chouteau County have been carefully monitoring rising waters, too.

Chouteau County Disaster & Emergency Services posted the following message on Friday: "Teton has been flooding and will continue to increase today toward Loma, but should then start to see some receding. Please be safe if you are going to be near high water. The water is very fast, high and full of debris, these things altogether do not make a good combination. Have a safe and fun weekend and enjoy the Summer Celebration in Fort Benton."

The Teton River is a 150-mile long tributary of the Marias River.

Chouteau County DES said in a Facebook post on Friday afternoon that "after talking with the National Weather Service, most of the rivers in Chouteau County will rise. The river we are watching is the Marias River. With increase flow into Tiber, the river will become higher due to the possible release of more water from the dam. Teton River is expected to increase as well. Remember situations can change rapidly! As always we will do our best to update you as we are notified of any flooding possibilities. Be safe and remember stay out of high water, Turn Around Don’t Drown! Right now rivers are higher than normal and flowing fast with a lot of debris!"

The agency also included a link to a National Weather Service site with current river and water level information.
