Sun River residents brace for flooding

Posted

The community of Sun River is being hit hard by flooding.

Highway 200 at Sun River and Sun River Road are both closed due to water rushing over the road.

Just in May, one family living near the fishing access on that road voluntarily evacuated their home. They still haven’t moved everything back in.

“This is our first time of going through it, now it’s our second, within a month. Not the mad scramble that we had before trying to get everything out of the house. We have the bare essentials in the house, enough to get by. We didn’t expect this again,” said Lisa Fox.

Right now, there are no evacuations in Sun River.

Off of Highway 200 in Sun River, more people were preparing for the rising floodwaters.

One family and some volunteers wrapped the bottom of a home with plastic and placed sandbags at the base.

One man said he was amazed with how the community came together.

“My brother has been able to get people out. I’ve called a couple. Everybody really comes and helps and people are here that I don’t even know. I mean I don’t know how they got called. They were driving down the street I think,” said Steve Opheim.

Directly across the street, another man was prepping his garage, but he doesn’t think things will be too bad.

“They say this is going to be about the same as the 2011 flood. If we sandbag the door and we lift things up, we won’t have much water damage. which will be pretty nice,” said Elliot Merja.

In Simms off of Simms Fairfield Road, many cars turned around after the section of the road flooded.

One woman was stuck just trying to get home to West Glacier from Bozeman.

"I think I just really want a hamburger and just to get home. I’m going to be late, I’m already late for work,” said Lauren Gandurski.

She said she had to turn around two separate times. She ended up driving through the flooding.
