Truck fire near Whitehall slows traffic

Posted

Flames fully consumed a semi-truck in a fire on I-90 eastbound about six miles east of Whitehall on Saturday morning.

According to the Montana Highway Patrol, as the truck blew a tire around mile marker 253, a wheel bearing sparked and the trailer detached, igniting the truck on fire. The truck was carrying lumber and construction materials.

MHP Trooper Michael O’Connor was en route to another incident on I-90 when he spotted the semi-truck fire. He began to apply fire extinguishing material as multiple fire departments responded. The truck was fully engulfed in flames by the time they arrived.

Willow Creek Fire Department, Whitehall Fire Department, MHP, the Jefferson County Sheriff, and the U.S. Forest Service all responded to the incident.

As of noon Saturday, one lane of I-90 East was reopened and firefighters continued working to extinguish the fire completely.

No one was injured in the fire.
