This week’s One Class at a Time recipient is Jennifer Lambert, an intervention coach at the Great Falls Public School Preschool.
She is giving her students the choice to calm down and regulate in a safe space.
The grant money of $250 will be used to buy books, bean bag chairs, camp chairs, pillows, and blankets for designated safe spaces.
At the preschool, they have embraced Conscious Discipline, and a major component of this is developing the skill of Self-Regulation.
The Safe Place is where dis-regulated students can safely regulate independently or with the help of a trusted adult.
The students are able to go through the 5 Steps of Self-Regulation: going to the safe place, calm down, identify emotions, choose a self-regulation tool, and problem solve.
“The importance of teaching kids self-regulation peace, we see a huge need for that now especially moving into kindergarten, if they have those skills, they’ll be prepared to learn,” she said.
She also added that these Self-Regulation skills will not only benefit the students over the course of their lifetime, but for society as a whole.
