When it comes to coffee, people are pretty particular with their preferences. Some like their cup of joe black, while at the other end of the spectrum, some will settle for nothing less than the latest barista-inspired coffee concoction. The latest trend in java consumption is whipped coffee, also known as dalgona coffee.

For the uninitiated: Whipped coffee is made by mixing instant coffee with sugar and water and then spooning it over milk.

Whipped coffee or dalgona coffee began to take off thanks to a viral video on TikTok, which now has more than 10 million views. Because it’s pretty easy to make, it has become a great way to replicate those fancy coffee shop beverages at home.

Some people have even posted their first tries at whipped coffee to social media, and they look great!

The basic recipe is simple: Mix together two tablespoons each of instant coffee, sugar and hot water. Then use a hand mixer or frother to create that creamy topping for the milk of your choice. Scoop your foamy mixture onto the milk — iced or hot — and voila, you have a whipped coffee!

Simply Mama Cooks posted a tutorial on YouTube for whipping up this beverage:

Now that is one pretty drink! You can make it hot or iced, and feel free to use the dairy milk or milk alternative of your choice. Just like your favorite caffeinated beverage at Starbucks, the options for customization are endless. Try adding cinnamon to the top or sprinkles, if you’re feeling really adventurous.

We recommend using a frother that heats and froths your beverages at the same time — like this top-rated frother from Miroco, which you can find on Amazon for $39.99.

While people are stuck inside practicing social distancing during the coronavirus crisis, experimenting with the coffee trend is a great way to pass the time and get your coffeehouse fix without leaving your abode.

Dalgona coffee has its roots in South Korea, where a popular candy known as dalgona or ppopgi is made by heating sugar, oil and baking soda and mixing until it’s thick and fluffy and then letting it harden.

Will you give this frothy coffee concoction a try?
