Capone the dog has been waiting to find his forever home for quite some time. The 10-year-old Labrador retriever mix has spent 1,134 days at the Animal Friends shelter in Pittsburg. Now, the sweet pup is finally being adopted by a family who had been fostering him for several weeks.
Some may say it’s an early Christmas miracle for the dog who is the shelter’s longest-term resident, having lived there for more than three years.
On Dec. 11, Animal Friends took to Facebook to celebrate Capone’s long-awaited adoption:

“1,135 DAYS!” reads the post. “They say good things come to those who wait…and that couldn’t be more true for our sweet Capone who FINALLY found his new family yesterday. Capone, our longest-term resident, has been with us since November 2017. And, we couldn’t be more thrilled to announce that yesterday, his foster family made it official and adopted this handsome boy! Happy tails, Capone! We’re so glad that you have a family of your own and a home for the holidays.”
Aww!
Capone’s age, as well as some medical and behavioral issues, were factors in Capone’s difficulty in finding a forever home. However, his new family says that with some TLC, he’s settling in just fine.
“Since we’ve welcome Capone into our home, his transformation has been truly amazing,” his family told WTAE. “His anxiety has diminished quickly and continues to melt away. He is a good and loving boy who enjoys snuggling and family life. We attribute his success to the care and training he received from the devoted staff and volunteers at Animal Friends, and we thank them for their efforts.”
On Dec. 16, the shelter posted a heartwarming video documenting Capone’s three years spent there. “We never gave up on him, no matter how long it took,” it begins. The video also captures a trainer teaching Capone how to find things by scent as his eyesight declined. It’s truly inspiring:
“We’re still celebrating the happy news of Capone’s adoption last week and we know how much he was loved by our staff, volunteers and supporters of Animal Friends!” they wrote in the post. “So, we put together a video celebrating the happy memories we shared with Capone over the past three years. Enjoy!”
Happy holidays to Capone and his forever family!
