In Chester, a One Class At A Time grant is helping high school students explore fresh literature.

Chester-Joplin-Inverness English teacher Teresa Tompkins purchased ten copies of the novel, ‘Ready, Player One’.

She hopes the high-interest novels will inspire ‘alliterate’ readers, or students who have the ability to read but choose not to.

Students have explored the online gaming culture described in the book while developing critical thinking skills and confidence.

“If I can get them to read a printed page we’re ahead of the game,” she said. “We’re working on reading to learn, not reading for information and hopefully those skills will carry into all of their other classes as well.”
