Third-grade students at Mountain View Elementary School used their skills to help their friend Marty the Multiplication Monkey by unlocking five breakout boxes with the help of our One Class At A Time program, which provided a $250 check to teacher Angie Shei recently.

“It was our first time using it, actually, it went pretty well, we lost a few pieces in the beginning but once we figured out where they were, they did much better  than I was expecting,” said Shei.

“You could open the big box first but we preferred the little one because the big one has too many locks,” said student Chasyn Rockwell.

Shei says students utilized a number of skills to solve riddles and unlock each box …before moving on to the next.

“Build the students’ knowledge on multiplication and do some reviewing but also it was to help build cooperation, critical thinking, communication,” said Shei.

It was a rush to the last box as students raced to unlock clues in teams, until finally: “We did it! We escaped!,” was heard around the classroom.

While students were rewarded with sweet victory-some said they were to hoping to find something else:

“I was expecting to find a giant key or a huge box of slime,” said student Ryan Cagle.
