Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) — Leaving your pet in a vehicle during summer months can turn into death traps for animals.
In Nevada, it’s illegal for private citizens to break into a car to get them out.
But John Waudby is pushing for our lawmakers to change that.
Waudby says he wants any good Samaritan to be able to break a window if they see a pet in distress.
In 2017, the state voted to allow law enforcement, animal control and first responders to break a vehicle window to rescue a pet in distress.
Last summer Waudby took action by creating an online petition demanding the law change to allow private citizens to break a window should they see an animal locked in a hot or cold vehicle.
Since starting this petition he’s gained over 130,000 signatures.
Waudby is hoping to get enough support for the petition that it will convince lawmakers to push for change.
