Orieona Louise Stensrud has been charged after she allegedly left a child outside unattended and later resisted arrest.

Court documents state that on Sunday evening, the Great Falls Police Department was called to a residence on 6th Avenue South for a welfare check on a child that had been left outside alone for between one and two hours.

Officers found the girl playing with a garden hose and she was wet. Court documents say that the temperature at the time was 60 degrees and the wind was about 12 miles per hour; the child told officers that she was cold, shivering, and had goosebumps. The documents also state: “A reasonable person would infer that it was far too cold for a child to be wet outside for any period of time.”

Officers knocked on the door of the home where the little girl was. Stensrud eventually answered the door.; court documents note that she appeared to just have woken up and said that she was babysitting the girl.

Stensrud said that she knew the girl was playing outside, and that she had told the girl she needed to come in and check with her. Stensrud admitted to laying down for a bit in a back bedreoom, but denied that she was sleeping.

Court documents allege that Stensrud then begin arguing with neighbors and using profanities.

Officers learned that there were outstanding warrants for Stensrud, and when they began to arrest her, she began to squirm and pull away to avoid being handcuffed.

Stensrud began to push away from the car and she kicked one of the police officers. Eventually, officers forced her into the back of the patrol vehicle. She continued resisting, and officers had to employ a leg restraint.

Stensrud, 22 years old, has been charged with felony assault on a peace officer and three misdemeanors: endangering the welfare of a child, obstructing a peace officer, and resisting arrest.

Prosecutors requested that bond for Stensrud be set at $5,000.

The court documents do not indicate the nature of the outstanding warrants.
