Former Great Falls CMR star Josh Huestis has signed with the San Antonio Spurs, the team announced Tuesday.
Huestis, a 6-foot-7 forward, has spent the past three seasons with Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder selected Huestis, who played collegiately at Stanford, as the 29th pick of the first round of the 2014 NBA Draft. This off-season marked the first time Huestis was an NBA free agent.
Huestis appeared in a career-high 69 games for OKC last season, starting 10 games and averaging 2.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. He bounced between the NBA and its developmental league from 2014 through the 2016-17 season, appearing in only seven NBA games between the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.
In high school at CMR, Huestis was Montana’s Gatorade player of the year in 2009 and 2010 after helping the Rustlers to back-to-back Class AA state championships. He averaged 17.3 points, 12.8 rebounds and 4.8 blocks per game as a senior and committed to play college basketball at Stanford, where he would become a two-time all-Pac-12 defensive team selection.
Huestis left the Cardinal as the program’s all-time leader in blocked shots with 190 during his four-year career. His 135 games played are fourth in program history, and he’s eighth in career rebounds (834).
Huestis also announced his signing on Instagram, posting, “Today I officially became a member of the @spurs organization. 3 weeks ago that didn’t seem plausible. On September 12th I suffered a Jones fracture in my right foot. So grateful to the Spurs for seeing potential in me and still giving me a chance to be a part of such a top notch organization. I’m on the road to recovery and I can guarantee I’ll be back better than I ever was.”
